Weighted Pull-Ups

Weighted pull-ups add external resistance to strict bodyweight repetitions. A dip belt with plates or a snug weighted vest makes progressive overload easy to measure. Added load is useful only after you can repeat a full range without swinging, reaching or shortening the bottom.

How to set up weighted pull-ups

  1. Attach a modest plate securely to a dip belt, or fit a vest tightly enough that it will not shift.
  2. Use a box to reach the bar without jumping while the weight swings below you.
  3. Take your normal grip, let the plate settle and brace the torso.
  4. Perform a strict pull-up: shoulders set, elbows down, chin clearly over the bar.
  5. Lower to your normal controlled bottom position, stabilise the weight and repeat.
  6. Finish by placing your feet on the box before releasing the bar.

How much weight should you add?

Start lighter than you think—often the smallest practical increment. Keep one or more clean repetitions in reserve and add load only when every set preserves the same range. Total system weight includes your bodyweight, so small plate increases can be meaningful.

Common mistakes

  • Shortening the range as load rises. A heavier partial is not automatic progress over a lighter full rep.
  • Letting the plate swing. Pause, brace and control the legs before the next repetition.
  • Holding a heavy dumbbell awkwardly. Use equipment that stays secure and allows a safe entry and exit.
  • Maxing out too often. Most strength is built with repeatable submaximal work.

Programming

Weighted pull-ups usually belong early in the session for low-to-moderate repetitions and full rest. Keep some bodyweight work if your goal also includes endurance. Added strength may help chest-to-bar and one-arm progressions, but those skills still require specific practice.
